Lithuania is ready for possible provocations on the border with Belarus due to the presence of the Wagner PMC in the country — Lithuanian President
Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda said that the country is ready for possible provocations on the border with Belarus due to the presence of the Wagner PMC in the country.
Delfi reported this.
Gitanas Nausėda notes that Lithuania has not recorded any provocations but does not rule out their possibility.
"Therefore, we will monitor their actions, strengthen our intelligence capabilities dedicated to this issue, monitor the situation, and be ready to respond if necessary," the President said.
At the same time, Nausėda believes the threat of provocations is serious for Lithuania. "There is too much temptation, being here, near our border, not to use their presence for various provocations. Therefore, I believe that the threat is serious," he said.
Nausėda did not assess the reports of Polish politicians about the possible intentions of Wagner PMC mercenaries to organise any provocations on the Lithuanian-Polish border. However, the President assured that the army is ready to respond to any actions initiated at the border, if necessary.
It will be recalled that a day earlier, Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said that more than 100 mercenaries of the Wagner PMC had headed to the Suwałki Gap, which unites the territory of the Baltic states with Poland and separates Russia's Kaliningrad region from Belarus.
