Latin American countries remove references to Ukraine from the declaration of the upcoming summit with the EU
The countries of Central and South America refused to keep the mentions of Ukraine in the declaration of the upcoming summit with the EU. They also opposed the presence of Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the event.
Euractiv writes about this, citing sources in diplomatic circles.
The summit of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) with the EU will be held in Brussels on July 17-18.
Ahead of the summit, they dropped references to Ukraine from the text of the summit declaration proposed by the EU.
According to Euractiv's sources, the declaration contained several paragraphs on support for Ukraine, referring to UN General Assembly resolutions.
"There is nothing special about anything we sent them," the publication quoted an unnamed diplomat as saying.
In addition, unexpectedly for European diplomats, CELAC members asked Europeans to pay reparations for the damage caused by slavery. This is likely to become a potentially controversial issue.
