Hungary will veto sanctions on Russian nuclear energy
"There are provisions that violate Hungary's fundamental interests, and we must veto them. The oil sanctions were such, the gas sanctions will be such that they cannot impose because of us. And now there are plans for new sanctions, now they want to extend them to the nuclear industry. This will obviously be vetoed. It will be a big battle," said Prime Minister of Hungary Viktor Orbán.
Back in August 2022, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy called for sanctions to be imposed on Rosatom for nuclear blackmail at the Zaporizhzhia NPP.
Hungary has one nuclear power plant in the city of Paks. It produces about half of Hungarian electricity.
In 2014, Orbán and Vladimir Putin signed an agreement on its expansion. According to it, Rosatom plans to build two more reactors at the plant.
