Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs Péter Szijjártó receives threats before his visit to Uzhhorod

Budapest, Hungary (Svidomi) — The Ukrainian Embassy in Hungary confirms that Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó had received threats before his visit to Ukraine's Uzhhorod, a border town in the west of the country. During the visit, the parties are to discuss preparations for the upcoming meeting between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.

On January 23, the Hungarian media outlet Index reported that Szijjártó had received an email in Ukrainian in which someone threatened him with murder.

"We advise you to place an order with the funeral parlour so that they can start making a coffin for Szijjártó and make it fit his height. God forgives everything, but Ukrainians do not," 

the letter read, according to the media outlet.

The meeting between the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Dmytro Kuleba, the head of the Office of the President of Ukraine, Andrii Yermak and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Hungary, Péter Szijjártó is to take place on January 29 in the Ukrainian border city of Uzhhorod. The key topic of the meeting is the organisation of a meeting between Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Hungary's Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.

The Hungarian Embassy in Ukraine confirmed that Péter Szijjártó had received threats before his visit to Uzhhorod, according to the Ukrainian media outlet Hromadske.

"Unfortunately, we did receive threats before our high-level visit. The implementation of this visit is very important for both countries, so it is unclear why someone is trying to make it impossible to improve relations in this way," the statement said.
