Hezbollah acquires Russian Oniks missiles in Syria — Reuters
The Lebanese group Hezbollah has acquired Yakhont missiles with a range of up to 300 km in Syria. The Yakhont is an export version of the Oniks anti-ship missile.
One of the agency's sources reports that Hezbollah's anti-ship capabilities have developed tremendously since 2006 when the group attacked an Israeli warship in the Mediterranean during the war with Israel and demonstrated for the first time that it could strike a ship at sea.
The agency writes that media reports and analysts have indicated for years that Hezbollah has acquired Yahonta missiles from Syria.
Three current and one former US official said Hezbollah has developed an impressive array of weapons, including anti-ship missiles.
"We're obviously paying a lot of attention to that... and we're taking what capabilities they have seriously," said one official, without commenting directly on whether the group had the Yakhont missile.
