Germany and Ukraine sign bilateral security agreement
Berlin, Germany (Svidomi) — Ukraine and Germany signed a bilateral agreement on security cooperation during President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's visit to Berlin, following up on the G7 declaration on "security guarantees" for Ukraine, the Office of the President of Ukraine reports.
The agreement will be valid for ten years and prioritise military, political, financial and humanitarian areas of bilateral security cooperation.
The agreement secures German support of more than €7 billion through 2024.
In addition, Germany is committed to working on sanctions pressure on Russia and to combat evasion of restrictive measures as long as Russia's war against Ukraine continues.
"The agreement also provides for a mechanism for emergency consultations in the event of a possible future armed attack by Russia on Ukraine. I thank Germany and the entire German people for their solidarity with our state and people, for all their support and assistance," Zelenskyy said.
"Zelenskyy and I signed an agreement today on our long-term security commitments – a historic step," Scholz wrote on social media platform X.
During the joint press conference, the German chancellor also said that Germany was preparing a new aid package for Ukraine worth more than a billion euros.
According to Scholz, the package will include:
- 36 armoured howitzers;
- 120 thousand shells;
- two Skynex systems;
- missiles for IRIS-T.
He said that Russia "is not ready for a lasting and just peace with Ukraine".
"I turn my attention to those who are shouting for quick peace and negotiations with Russia. The peace should not be a Russian-style peace," Scholz concluded.
