Fighting for Mariinka in Donetsk region continues — Ukrainian military leadership

Ukraine has denied information about Russian capture of Mariinka, a town 23 kilometres from Donetsk that Russia occupied in 2014.

The spokesman for the Joint Press Centre of the Tavriia Defence Forces, Oleksandr Shtupun, issued a statement.

Currently, the [Ukrainian] military remain within the administrative borders of Mariinka. The town has been razed to the ground. But it is wrong to talk about the complete capture of Mariinka,

Shtupun said.

On December 25, Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu reported to the Russian president on the alleged complete capture of Mariinka by the Russian army.

This is not the first time that Russia has claimed to have "captured" Mariinka.

In 2014, the city was caught in a battle zone between the illegal armed group "DPR" and the Ukrainian army. Since March 2022, fierce fighting has been raging in Mariinka.
