The director called F-16 fighters "one of the scariest killing machines of our time" and added: "Russian lives matter also."
In response, Oleksii Danilov wrote on his social media that behind every Russian terrorist is a murdered Ukrainian.
"The choice between the executioner and the victim becomes a tragedy when the artist chooses the side of the executioner," the National Security and Defence Council secretary wrote.
Lars von Trier is known for his works Nymphomaniac, Dogville, The House That Jack Built, and others.
It will be recalled that Ukraine will receive 42 F-16 fighter jets.
