Cholera and E. coli found in the Kherson region — State Environmental Inspectorate

Flooding caused by the explosion of the Kakhovka HPP contaminated the water with fuels and lubricants and pesticides. Cholera and E. coli have already been detected, said Oleh Pavlenko, head of the State Land Resources Supervision Department of the State Environmental Inspectorate of Ukraine.

There is no major contamination, but there are cases of cholera and E. coli.

"We are monitoring the southern district, taking water samples and analysing them daily. The Sanitary and Epidemiological Station is also doing analyses, as many settlements, outbuildings and sewers have been flooded. We examine the water in terms of chemistry, and they (the Sanitary and Epidemiological Station specialists - ed.) - in terms of biology," said the representative of the State Environmental Inspectorate.

Water from the wells can be consumed only after they are cleaned and the samples are tested in the laboratory.

"The question is how it will sprout. The soils there are very heavy and saline. There is gypsum in the lower layers," Pavlenko added.

Earlier, the Ministry of Health of Ukraine warned of the risk of infectious diseases due to the flooding.

"Hazardous chemicals, as well as infectious agents from cemeteries, toilets, and landfills, may end up in wells and open water bodies in the area flooded by the Russians' explosion of the Kakhovka HPP," the Ministry wrote.
