The Verkhovna Rada and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine urge non-recognition of Russian presidential "elections" in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine
Kyiv, Ukraine (Svidomi) — The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine has appealed to the governments and parliaments of foreign countries, international organisations, and parliamentary assemblies regarding the Russian Federation's "presidential elections" on the temporarily occupied territory of Ukraine.
282 MPs supported the appeal. In the document, Ukrainian MPs call for:
- Condemn Russia's actions regarding the "presidential elections" in the temporarily occupied territory of Ukraine.
- Counter Russia's attempts to engage international observers to legitimise the "presidential elections" in the temporarily occupied territory of Ukraine.
- Increase sanctions pressure on Russia and impose individual special economic and other restrictive measures against individuals from the Russian Federation involved in the illegal "presidential elections" in the temporarily occupied territory of Ukraine.
- Consolidate the efforts of Ukraine's partners to increase assistance to the Defence Forces by providing military aid and facilitating the restoration of the country's territorial integrity within the internationally recognised border.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine states that the holding of the Russian presidential "elections" in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine is illegal, and the election campaign "demonstrates Russia's continued blatant violation of the norms and principles of international law".
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs called on Ukrainians in the temporarily occupied territories not to participate in the Russian presidential "elections".
