He will be president of the Czech Republic for the next five years.

According to Pavel, the Czech Republic can be a significant player in foreign policy, and a unified Central European voice will be essential to help Ukraine win.

"Not only our historical experience should be the reason for us to continue supporting it [Ukraine - ed. After all, we are helping ourselves," the newly elected president said.

In his inaugural speech, Pavel announced that he would soon unveil a plan of specific goals for his first 100 days in office. 

Petr Pavel, a retired general, former chief of staff of the Czech Republic's army and former chairman of the NATO Military Committee, won more than 57% of the vote. His opponent, Andrej Babiš, received 43.75 per cent.

In the first round, Pavel received 35.40% of the vote. 

The politician supports the provision of military assistance to Ukraine and has initiated fundraising to help the Ukrainian military.

"Ukraine should not conduct peace talks now but drive the Russians out of its territory," Pavel said about the war in Ukraine.
