President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with members of Congress and senators to discuss financial aid to Ukraine
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with members of Congress and senators to discuss financial aid to Ukraine.
CNN reports this with reference to the senators.
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, a representative of the Democratic Party, said that Zelenskyy's meeting with lawmakers was "very powerful".
According to Schumer, Zelenskyy "outlined in great detail what Ukraine needs and how the United States can assist the country in defending itself against Russia."
During the conversation, the Ukrainian president tried to allay the senators' concerns about corruption in Ukraine.
According to Republican Senator Thom Tillis, Zelenskyy was greeted warmly. He persuaded them to provide aid to Ukraine and did not put pressure on the border policy issue in the aid funding bill.
Next, the Ukrainian president is to meet with House Speaker Mike Johnson and US President Joe Biden.
Before meeting with Zelenskyy, Mike Johnson said that his approach to aid to Ukraine had not changed. In his view, any future aid to Ukraine should include border security and be voted on separately from aid to Israel.
After meeting with Zelenskyy, Johnson said he had a "good meeting" with the Ukrainian president. The Speaker of the House criticised the White House for failing to articulate a clear path to victory for Ukraine, which Republicans say is a prerequisite for unlocking military aid.
Our first condition on any national security supplemental spending package is about our own national security,
Johnson told reporters.
He added that he had reiterated to Zelenskyy that "the United States stands with him against Putin's brutal invasion."
