Moldovan parliament to amend Electoral Code to ban former members of Șor Party from running for office

The Moldovan parliament will approve amendments to the Electoral Code to ban former members of the pro-Russian Șor Party from running in the elections.

This is not the first attempt to amend the Electoral Code. On October 3, the court ruled unconstitutional an amendment to the Electoral Code that banned representatives of unconstitutional parties from running in the elections.

The new amendments, according to the speaker of the Moldovan parliament, Igor Grosu, will "fill in the gaps" that the court had rejected the previous day.

In particular, the MPs will approve an amendment that will allow them to clarify the list of people who are not eligible to participate in elections.

The law, which supplements the Electoral Code, will also provide for the possibility of appealing administrative decisions that impose these restrictions to the Appeals Chamber.

Șor is a pro-Russian party that until October 2016 was known as the Socio-Political Movement "Equality." The party has organised protests against the current President of Moldova, Maia Sandu, and has cross-party contacts with Russia.

In June 2023, the country's Constitutional Court declared the Șor party unconstitutional. After that, its faction was dissolved.
