Mike Johnson becomes the new Republican US House Speaker
Mike Johnson, a representative of the Republican Party, has become the new Speaker of the US House of Representatives. He received a sufficient number of votes.
This is evidenced by the broadcast of the meeting.
220 members of the House voted in his favour.
Johnson was elected to the post of speaker after three failed candidates.
The absence of the speaker effectively paralysed the work of the House of Representatives, in particular, it was impossible to agree on an additional package of military aid for Ukraine and Israel.
Johnson was elected after the previous contender, Tom Emmer, withdrew his candidacy a few hours after the party members voted for him. The reason was the stiff opposition of the right wing of the Republican Party and serious opposition from Donald Trump.
Mike Johnson is an ally of Donald Trump and defended him during his impeachment hearings.
The Republicans for Ukraine group rates Johnson's support for Ukraine as very low. In May 2022, Johnson voted against a $40 billion aid package for Ukraine.
