The mayor of Paris, which will host the 2024 Olympic Games, opposes the presence of Russian athletes

Anne Hidalgo said this live on franceinfo.

Hidalgo says that while the war is ongoing, it is impossible to parade as if nothing had happened and have a Russian delegation come to Paris while bombs continue to fall on Ukraine.

During a previous interview in late January, the mayor of the Olympic host city said that she was in favour of Russian participation "under a neutral flag" so as not to "deprive athletes of competition." Now she considers such a compromise "indecent."

"[There is no such thing as a neutral flag - ed. note]. Sometimes there are athletes who are dissidents. They march and compete under the banner of refugees. The neutral banner was a subject of doping, and that was the choice they made. I am not in favour of that option. I would find that totally indecent. [...] In any case, we are not going to parade one country that is attacking another and pretend that it does not exist. So, I am not in favour of there being a Russian delegation at the Paris Olympics, especially obviously if the war is still taking place, which I do not want," explained Anne Hidalgo.

If the International Olympic Committee (IOC) authorises the presence of the Russian flag during the events, Hidalgo assures that she "will not agree with this position."

On January 25, the International Olympic Committee proposed to allow Russians and Belarusians to compete under a neutral flag.

Ukraine opposed allowing Russian and Belarusian athletes to compete under a neutral flag at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.

International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach said that excluding athletes because of their passports was not in line with the values and mission of the Olympic Charter.
